تقع دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة في قلب الخليج العربي بين خطي عرض 22 و 26.30 درجة شمالاً وخطي طول 51 و 56.30 درجة شرقاً ، يحدها من الشمال الخليج العربي ومن الغرب دولة قطر والمملكة العربية السعودية ومن الجنوب سلطنة عمان والمملكة العربية السعودية ومن الشرق خليج عمان.
تبلغ مساحة الدولة 83600 كيلومتراً مربعاً وتتضمن عددا من الجزر تصل مساحتها حوالي 5900 كلم مربعا، ويقدر عدد سكان دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة في عام 1995 بحوالي 2411041 فرداً، ومدينة أبو ظبي هي عاصمة الدولة.
وتتكون دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة من سبع أمارات هي : إمارة أبو ظبي ، إمارة دبي ، إمارة الشارقة ، إمارة عجمان ، إمارة أم القيوين ، إمارة رأس الخيمة وإمارة الفجيرة .
وقد أعلن عن قيام هذا الإتحاد في الثاني من ديسمبر 1971 ، وتم انتخاب صاحب السمو الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان رئيساً للدولة لمدة خمس سنوات وقد جددت فترات الرئاسة خمس مرات على التوالي .
وقد شهدت دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة منذ قيامها حقبة من النمو الإقتصادي السريع ، النادر التحقيق في كثير من المجتمعات النامية بل والمتقدمة ، مستخدمة في ذلك عوائدها النفطية المتزايدة في اشباع حاجات المجتمع الأساسية .

إمارة أبو ظبي :
تقع إمارة أبو ظبي على الخليج العربي بين خطي عرض 22.5 و 25 درجة شمالاً وخطي طول 51 و 55 درجة شرقاً ، وهي أكبر الإمارات السبع إذ تبلغ مساحتها حوالي 67340 كيلومتراً مربعاً وهي تعادل 86.7 % من مساحة الدولة بدون الجزر .
ومدينة أبو ظبي هي عاصمة الإمارة . وتتكون من ثلاث مناطق رئيسية :
الأولى : منطقة أبو ظبي وبها مدينة أبو ظبي عاصمة الدولة .
الثانية : المنطقة الشرقية وعاصمتها مدينة العين .
الثالثة : المنطقة الغربية وعاصمتها مدينة بدع زايد .
ويتبع الإمارة العديد من الجزر أهمها جزيرة داس ومبرز وزركوه وأرزنة وهي من أهم مناطق حقول البترول البحرية ، وجزيرة دلما والسعديات وأبو الأبيض .
(2) إمارة دبي :
تقع على ساحل الخليج العربي بطول يبلغ حوالي 72 كيلومتراً ، وتبلغ مساحة إمارة دبي حوالي 3885 كيلومتراً وهي تعادل 5 % من مساجة الدولة بدون الجزر.
ومدينة دبي هي عاصمة الإمارة ، ويقسمها الى قسمين خليج مائي يسمى خور دبي يمتد داخلها مسافة 10 كيلومترات . وتعتبر منطقة جبل علي من أهم المناطق التجارية والصناعية بالدولة حيث يوجد بها أكبر منطقة حرة بمنطقة الخليج ، كما يوجد فيها الحوض الجاف وميناء جبل علي ومصنع دوبال للألمنيوم . ومن أهم المعالم السياحية بالإمارة منطقة حتا والعوير والخوانيج .
(3) إمارة الشارقة :
تقع إمارة الشارقة على ساحل الخليج العربي بطول يبلغ اكثر من 16 كيلومتراً وتتوغل في الداخل الى اكثر من 80 كيلومتراً ويتبع الإمارة على الساحل الشرقي على خليج عمان ثلاثة مناطق هي كلبا وخورفكان ودبا الحصن . وتبلغ مساحة الإمارة 2590 كيلومتراً مربعاً وهي تعادل 3.3 % من مساحة الدولة بدون الجزر ، ومدينة الشارقة عاصمة الامارة وتقع على الخليج العربي وتتبع أمارة الشارقة بعض الواحات أهمها منطقة الذيد ويتبعها في المنطقة الشرقية على خليج عمان مدينة خورفكان والتي بها ميناء بحري هام كما يتبع الإمارة جزيرتا أبو موسى وصير أبو نعير .
إمارة عجمان :
تقع إمارة عجمان على ساحل الخليج العربي بطول حوالي 16 كيلومتراً بين إمارة الشارقة وإمارة أم القيوين وتبلغ مساحة الإمارة حوالي 259 كيلومتراً مربعاً وهي تعادل 0.3 % من مساحة الدولة بدون الجزر ، ومدينة عجمان هي عاصمة الامارة وتقع على ساحل الخليج العربي. ويتبع إمارة عجمان منطقة مصفوت وهي منطقة زراعية وتقع على بعد 110 كيلومترات في الجنوب الشرقي للإمارة كما يتبعها أيضاً منطقة المنامة .
إمارة أم القيوين :
تقع إمارة أم القيوين على ساحل الخليج العربي بطول يمتد حوالي 24 كيلومتراً بين إمارتي الشارقة غرباً ورأس الخيمة شرقاً وتمتد أراضيها في الداخل حوالي 32 كيلومتراً ، وتبلغ مساحة الإمارة حوالي 777 كيلومتراً مربعاً وهي تعادل 1 % من مساحة الدولة بدون الجزر ، ومدينة أم القيوين هي عاصمة الامارة . ويتبع الإمارة منطقة فلج المعلا وهي تقع على مسافة 50 كيلومتراً جنوب شرقي مدينة أم القيوين ، كما يتبع الإمارة جزيرة السينية التي تبعد كيلومتراً واحداً عن مدينة أم القيوين ومساحتها 90 كيلومتراً مربعاً .
إمارة رأس الخيمة :
تقع إمارة رأس الخيمة في الجزء الأقصى من المشرق العربي على ساحل الخليج العربي بطول يبلغ حوالي 64 كيلومتراً ،وتمتد الإمارة الى الداخل لمسافة تزيد على 128 كيلومتراً وتشترك مع سلطنة عمان من ناحية الشمال الشرقي في حدود جبلية ، ويتبع الإمارة عدد من الجزر في مياه الخليج من اهمها جزيرتا طنب الكبرى وطنب الصغرى وتبلغ مساحة الإمارة 1684 كيلومتراً مربعاً وتعادل 2.2 % من مساحة الدولة بدون الجزر ، ومدينة رأس الخيمة هي عاصمة الإمارة ، ويقسمها الى قسمين لسان مائي يسمى خور رأس الخيمة ، ومن المناطق الهامة بالامارة تأتي منطقة خور خوير الصناعية والتي تبعد حوالي 25 كيلومتراً نحو الشمال حيث تشتهر بالعديد من الصناعات الهامة مثل الأسمنت والاحجار والرخام كما يوجد بها ميناء التصدير الرئيسي (ميناء صقر ) ، ومنطقة الرمس التي يعمل سكانها منذ القدم بصيد البحر ، وكذلك منطقة الدقداقة التي تشتهر بالمشاريع الزراعية الهامة كما يوجد بها اكبر مصنع في الخليج للصناعات الدوائية (جلفار) ومنطقة خت السياحية التي تتوفر فيها المياه الحارة الكبريتية .
إمارة الفجيرة :
إمارة الفجيرة هي الإمارة الوحيدة من امارات الدولة التي تقع على خليج عمان وخارج مضيق هرمز ، وتمتد شواطئها على خليج عمان 90 كيلومتراً ، وهذا الموقع يكسبها اهمية استراتيجية مميزة ، وتبلغ مساحة الامارة 1165 كيلومتراً مربعاُ وهي تعادل 1.5 % من مساحة الدولة بدون الجزر. ومدينة الفجيرة هي عاصمة الامارة . ومن المناطق الهامة بالامارة منطقة دبا الفجيرة حيث يوجد بها اهم المشروعات الزراعية والثروة الحيوانية كما تشتهر بصيد الاسماك .

تقع دولة الامارات العربية المتحدة في المنطقة المدارية الجافة التي تمتد عبر آسيا وشمال افريقيا وتخضع في نفس الوقت لتأثيرات المحيط الهندي لوقوعها على ساحلي الخليج العربي وخليج عمان ولهذا ترتبط حرارتها الشديدة صيفا بارتفاع نسبة الرطوبة ، ونلاحظ فروقاً واضحة بين مناخ المناطق الساحلية والمناطق الصحراوية الداخلية والمرتفعات الجبلية .
