Earth Science Picture of the Day (EPOD) recently published this photograph showing the Noguera Ribagorçana River cutting through ranges of the central Pyrenees Mountains in northern Spain. As EPOD noted: "The mountains here primarily consist of Mesozoic calcareous rocks interspersed with marl. Estret d’Escales Pass between Talló d’Aulet (4,888 ft or 1,490 m), at left, and Sierra de San Gervàs, at right, is the main access route to the Val d'Aran (Aran Valley) and to France from the south. At the lower center is the village of Sopeira." The photograph was taken by Xavier Varela on March 29, 2015
