This photograph, originally published on Earth Science Picture of the Day, shows several volcanic vents inside Tengger caldera on the island of Java. In the foreground is the inactive Batok cone with Mount Bromo (2,329 meters or 7,641 feet) smoldering to its left. The Tengger caldera is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) wide and contains five stratovolcanoes formed over the last 820,000 years.
