الصحاري:
تشغل الصحاري بكافة أنواعها (الباردة، والمعتدلة، والحارة) نحو 45.5 مليون كم2، وتمتد في نصف الكرة الشمالي ما بين دائرتي عرض 22 ْ ـ 48 ْ شمالاً في قارة آسيا، وتكاد تكون نطاقاً عرضياً، يمتد من الغرب إلى الشرق لمسافة تصل إلى 11 ألف كيلومتر ما بين أفريقيا وآسيا. وتمتد صحاري قارة أمريكا الشمالية بين دائرتي عرض 22 ْ ـ 44 ْ شمالاً. وتتمثل الصحاري في نصف الكرة الجنوبي في أمريكا الجنوبية (ما بين دائرتي عرض 5 ْ ـ 30 ْ جنوباً)، وأفريقيا (6 ْ ـ 33 ْ جنوباً)، واستراليا (20 ْ ـ 34 ْ جنوباً).
وتتباين المساحات الصحراوية من قارة إلى أخرى، تتصدرها قارة استراليا ، إذ تمثل الصحاري بها نحو 49% من إجمالي مساحتها، وتتذيلها قارة أوروبا، إذ لا تشغل الصحاري بها إلاّ نحو 1% فقط من مساحتها، وكذلك تتفاوت أقطار العالم من حيث المساحات التي تشغلها الصحاري، فعلى سبيل تمثل الصحاري 98% من مساحة ليبيا، و96% من مساحة مصر، و95% من مساحة شبه الجزيرة العربية، و88% من مساحة باكستان، و11% من مساحة الهند.
